The Story of the Quinta
What began as a dream to create a family home has evolved into one of Northern Portugal’s most distinctive private retreat experiences.
In 2014, Rui and Elizabete acquired a historic ruin in the heart of the Douro Verde region with the vision of transforming it into a home for their family. Through a careful restoration that honored the property’s heritage while embracing modern comfort, the estate gradually came to life.
By 2016, they began welcoming guests, sharing the beauty and tranquility of the Quinta one room at a time, much like a traditional rural guesthouse. However, an unexpected turning point arrived in 2020. Faced with changing travel realities, the owners began hosting only private groups, offering the entire estate to a single reservation at a time. What initially began as a necessity soon revealed itself as something far more special—a uniquely intimate and exclusive experience that guests greatly valued.
Recognizing the appeal of complete privacy and personalized hospitality, Rui and Elizabete embraced this vision permanently in 2022. The estate was expanded from eight to ten beautifully appointed rooms and suites, while new amenities were added to elevate the guest experience.
Today, the Quinta is reserved exclusively for one group at a time, ensuring complete privacy, comfort, and the feeling of being welcomed into a private country estate rather than a traditional hotel. There are no outside guests, no crowds, and no shared spaces with strangers—just your group enjoying the Quinta as its own private retreat.
Each suite features a private bathroom, air conditioning, Smart TV, and a private terrace or balcony overlooking the surrounding countryside. Guests also enjoy exclusive access to the estate’s exceptional amenities, including a heated indoor saltwater pool, outdoor swimming pool, sauna, Turkish bath, hydromassage facilities, padel court, and a rooftop terrace offering spectacular views across the Douro landscape.
The result is a rare combination of authentic Portuguese hospitality, modern luxury, and complete exclusivity—an ideal setting for relaxation, connection, and unforgettable experiences in one of Portugal’s most beautiful regions.

What Is a “Quinta”?
As you travel through the Douro Valley and other wine regions of Portugal, you will frequently hear the word Quinta. Pronounced “KEEN-tah,” a Quinta is the Portuguese term for a country estate or farm, much like a vineyard estate or winery property.
In the Douro Valley, a Quinta is much more than simply a vineyard. Traditionally, a Quinta encompasses the vineyards, winery, cellars, agricultural lands, and often the historic manor house that serves as the heart of the estate. Many Quintas have been owned and cultivated by the same families for generations, with winemaking traditions passed down over centuries.
The most prestigious Quintas are known for producing exceptional Douro DOC wines and Port wines, and many have become internationally recognized for their quality and heritage. Each Quinta possesses its own unique combination of vineyard location, elevation, soil composition, sun exposure, and grape varieties—factors collectively known as terroir that influence the character of the wines produced there.
Historically, Quintas were largely self-sustaining properties, producing not only wine but also olive oil, fruits, vegetables, and livestock. Today, while wine remains their primary focus, many Quintas have opened their doors to visitors, offering tastings, tours, accommodations, and immersive experiences that allow guests to discover the beauty and traditions of the Douro Valley firsthand.
Throughout your journey, you will visit several remarkable Quintas, each with its own story, history, and distinctive wines. Together, they offer a fascinating glimpse into the culture, craftsmanship, and heritage that have made the Douro Valley one of the world’s most celebrated wine regions.
Douro Valley location in Portugal
Discover the Douro Valley
Nestled in northeastern Portugal, the Douro Valley is one of the world’s oldest demarcated wine regions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its breathtaking beauty and exceptional wines. Carved by the winding Douro River, the region is characterized by dramatic terraced vineyards, rolling hills, and picturesque villages that have been shaped by centuries of winemaking tradition.
Stretching eastward toward the Spanish border, the Douro is divided into three distinct sub-regions, each with its own unique climate, landscape, and wine styles:
-
Baixo Corgo – The westernmost and greenest part of the Douro, known for its milder climate and lush vineyards.
-
Cima Corgo – The heart of the Douro and home to many of the region’s most prestigious estates and renowned Port wines.
-
Douro Superior – The easternmost sub-region, where a warmer, drier climate produces wines of remarkable concentration and character.
