England’s Garden – History, Heritage & Hidden Treasures
Rolling vineyards, medieval towns, magnificent castles, timeless gardens, and centuries-old traditions await as we discover one of England’s most enchanting regions. From the picturesque Weald of Kent to the historic villages of East Sussex, this leisurely five-day journey celebrates the people, places, and craftsmanship that have shaped England’s Garden for generations.
Sunday Pick up and arrival at our lovingly converted Oast house Estate featuring four double rooms (one with additional single bed), one twin and two bunk rooms (one with additional single bed). Also on site are two hot tubs, an indoor heated pool, a games room, and a pond with boats and stocked full of fish to feed!
Monday – Traditional Crafts & England’s Finest Sparkling Wine
Our adventure begins with a fascinating introduction to one of Sussex’s most treasured traditions—trug making. For generations, skilled craftsmen have transformed locally grown sweet chestnut and willow into the iconic hand-crafted garden baskets still prized throughout Britain today. Watching these artisans at work offers a wonderful glimpse into a craft that has stood the test of time.
Following lunch in a local village, we’ll spend the afternoon at the award-winning Gusbourne Estate, where England’s world-class sparkling wines have earned international acclaim. Stroll through the vineyards, learn about England’s rapidly growing wine industry, and enjoy a guided tasting in this beautiful countryside setting.
Tuesday – Tenterden & A Journey Through Time
Today we discover the delightful market town of Tenterden, with its elegant High Street lined with independent boutiques, antiques, galleries, and inviting cafés. It is easy to understand why this charming town has long been considered one of Kent’s hidden gems.
After lunch, we’ll board the beautifully restored Kent & East Sussex Railway. Sit back and relax as our heritage steam train winds through the rolling countryside of the High Weald, passing ancient woodlands, picturesque farms, and storybook villages on one of Britain’s most celebrated preserved railways.
Wednesday – Medieval Rye & Kent’s Hop Heritage
Steeped in history and overflowing with character, the medieval town of Rye is one of England’s most picturesque destinations. Wander its cobbled streets, admire centuries-old timber-framed buildings, browse charming galleries and antique shops, and discover the stories hidden behind every corner.
Following lunch, we’ll explore one of Kent’s defining industries—hop growing. For centuries, the fertile soils of Kent have produced some of England’s finest hops, supplying breweries throughout Britain and beyond. We’ll learn about the cultivation, harvesting, and drying of hops while seeing the distinctive oast houses that have become enduring symbols of the Kent countryside.
Thursday – The Loveliest Castle in the World & Historic Canterbury
This morning we visit magnificent Leeds Castle, often described as “the loveliest castle in the world.” Surrounded by a shimmering moat and exquisite gardens, the castle has served as a Norman fortress, a royal palace, and the favored residence of kings and queens for nearly nine centuries. Its beautifully furnished rooms and tranquil grounds make it one of England’s most treasured historic landmarks.
Following lunch, we continue to the cathedral city of Canterbury, where the magnificent Canterbury Cathedral has welcomed pilgrims for nearly a thousand years. As one of England’s most important religious and historic sites, the cathedral offers a remarkable journey through the nation’s history.
The afternoon is yours to enjoy at a leisurely pace. Browse the independent boutiques along the King’s Mile, explore Canterbury’s charming medieval lanes, visit the Roman Museum, or simply relax while enjoying the atmosphere of this remarkable city.
Friday – Bodiam Castle & Sussex Wine Country
Our final day takes us to the spectacular Bodiam Castle, one of England’s finest examples of a medieval moated castle. Rising dramatically from its surrounding waters, this fairy-tale fortress has captivated visitors for more than six hundred years and remains one of Britain’s most photographed castles.
Following lunch in a traditional country inn, we’ll conclude our journey with a visit to the boutique Oastbrook Estate Vineyard. Nestled among the gentle hills of East Sussex, this family-owned vineyard produces exceptional still and sparkling wines. As we enjoy our final tasting overlooking the vines, we’ll reflect on a memorable week filled with history, craftsmanship, beautiful countryside, and the warm hospitality that makes Kent and East Sussex such special places to visit.
