“If you could visit the best of the best….? If you could taste the best wines in the World…? We have access to the top Chateaux and will organize the best Tours. Many of the best Chateaux are not accessible. They do not open their doors to visitors to taste and look around. We have great links through the wine trade as well as being in the area for many years to be able to get access to the best.” Hamish Wakes-Miller, Bella Wine Tours

Tuesday

Breakfast and then we will explore the city of Bordeaux.  In historical times, around 300 BC it was the settlement of a Celtic tribe, the Bituriges Vivisci, who named the town Burdigala, probably of Aquitanian origin. The name Bourde is still the name of a river south of the city. The 18th century was the golden age of Bordeaux. Many downtown buildings (about 5,000), including those on the quays, are from this period. Victor Hugo found the town so beautiful he once said: “Take Versailles, add Antwerp, and you have Bordeaux”. Baron Haussmann, a long-time prefect of Bordeaux, used Bordeaux’s 18th-century large-scale rebuilding as a model when he was asked by Emperor Napoleon III to transform a then still quasi-medieval Paris into a “modern” capital that would make France proud.

Lunch* in Bordeaux and then we will enjoy our own private, guided walking tour of the city. We will then return to the Chateau for a relaxing evening of Canapés and a Gourmet dinner.

The Romans planted vineyards in what was to become Saint-Émilion as early as the 2nd century. In the 4th century, the Latin poet Ausonius lauded the fruit of the bountiful vine. The town was named after the monk Émilion, a travelling confessor, who settled in a hermitage carved into the rock there in the 8th century. The monks who followed him started up the commercial wine production in the area. .It is a delightful and picturesque village.
